We stayed at Jardin Florian again. We rented an apartment which is compact but beautiful and has everything we need and is in a prime location. The lovely owner Niall collects us from Nice airport and escorts us to the apartment.
We touched down to glorious sunshine and after dropping our luggage off we had a walk along La Croisette, around the harbour and then stopped at Le Grand Cafe for lunch in the sun. We love to sit and watch the world go by. Cannes is our fav place because it’s so relaxing and everyone is so friendly. After lunch we had a browse in some of the wonderful shops along Rue d’Antibes. We grabbed a few essentials from the supermarket and then headed back to our apartment. As we had been travelling since 4am we decided to chill in at Jardin Florian with a nice bottle of wine and some snacks for the evening. We woke the next morning fully recharged and ready to go.
As in previous years we had visited Monte Carlo we decided to take a trip to Menton instead. We walked the few minutes to the train station Gare de Cannes, stopping on the way for a traditional baguette in Les Palais des Pains, and purchased rail tickets to Menton. It was a pleasant journey which took around one and a half hours. Beautiful scenery could be seen along the way. Mention was nice but not as nice as Cannes. It would probably look more appealing in the summer sunshine! Even so we had a lovely walk through the Old Town which was full of families enjoying new years eve together. We had lunch in a lovely restaurant called La Brazza. Great food and great atmosphere. I had a salad nicoise and hubby had fillets of beef with fries and mushroom sauce. After a very enjoyable lunch we walked back up to the train station and caught a train back to Cannes. Once back in Cannes we had a walk around the fair on the harbour and watched the youngsters ice skating. Everywhere was so full of life and people everywhere enjoying themselves. We grabbed a burger and fries in Steaks n Shakes and it was actually the best burger I have ever tasted. Omg I can’t wait to go back there again! That evening we decided to have a few drinks in the apartment and then walked down to La Croisette to watch the fireworks at midnight. What a display! Fantastic. What an amazing way to see in the new year.
New Years day we decided to catch a train to Grasse. Once in Grasse we caught a bus into the centre of town. There wasn’t much open because it was a bank holiday so we just had a little mooch and then stopped in a restaurant to have a bite to eat. With tummy’s full of pizza we walked back down to the station rather than catching a bus. We found it eventually haha. We got back to Cannes around 6pm, went back to the apartment for a shower and change of clothes and then went to New York, New York for dinner and drinks. Very very busy with families but a great atmosphere. Food was ok but not fantastic. We were so tired I think we were back at the apartment by 10pm!
The next day was our final day in Cannes and we were sad to have to say farewell. We had nice walk along La Croisette and then had a fabulous lunch in a beach front restaurant called Plage Royale. I had the the Gambas with fricassee and vegetables. Omg the prawns were huge and so delicious. Hubby had hamburger with fries which he also said was amazing. The waiter was very friendly and helpful being as our use of the French language is not so good. Unfortunately by then our stay in Cannes had come to an end and we had to catch the coach to Nice Airport. There is so much to do in Cannes at New Year for people of all ages. This year we are going to bring our 7 year old granddaughter with us. She will love the fair and the ice skating. We will also hire a car and go to St Paul de Vence because that place just takes my breath away. We would also like to come back in the summer so we can take advantage of the glorious beaches in and around Cannes.
We love Cannes and can’t wait to return hopefully for our birthdays in February! Thanks for having us 🙂
