Monday, August 24, 2015, saw the City of Cannes celebrate seventy-one years of it’s release from the German occupation and oppression of the Vichy government.
David Lisnard, Mayor of Cannes, Cannes invited all residents to go to the many ceremonies organised by the City.
What a day – even the rain could not stop the show!! – we stepped onto Rue D’Antibes- my daughter and I – we had just been walking around Cannes, looking to see where the parade was going to happen or NOT….and then all of a sudden – the horns hooted, cheers got louder, and the fun began – thrown back into history with some amazing trucks, jeeps not to mention all the participants in full dress of the era! – and what fun as they drove by they handed out sweets, gum – just as they did all those years ago!!
It is great to re-live history so that our children can learn and never forget! Nevertheless it is also important to remember that on all sides fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, uncles aunties etc etc died – all in the name of liberty and freedom for all.
